RÓMANTÍK by JACLYN POUCEL ÁRNASON
My newest collection, “Rómantík” / Romanticism, in English, is directly inspired by the Romantic movement, mostly in Europe, of art and literature that began in 1800 and lasted until 1850.
“...Among the characteristic attitudes of Romanticism were the following: a deepened appreciation of the beauties of nature; a general exaltation of emotion over reason and of the senses over intellect; a turning in upon the self and a heightened examination of human personality and its moods and mental potentialities…”
Romanticism was all about the beauty and simplicity of nature, the overwhelming power of emotions, and the inner dialogue and feeling of human nature. It was also a movement that rejected the industrialism of the time and the classical style. It was a renaissance of its own sort, where the artists and writers wanted to capture their passions and their provocations by nature and move away from the modernity of the time.
With all of this in mind, the paintings in this series will be my abstract interpretations of specific paintings and poems from the European Romantic period, and will be mostly influenced by the colors and composition used during that time and my own style and personal connections to them. I wanted to create that dream-like quality of being captivated by beauty and feeling, as well as, intense emotion and the smallness one feels in the presence of the incredible and powerful natural world.
