Iceland is unforgiving and remote; therefore very unique, and so are its ways. Torg, its largest art fair with over 12,000 visitors, is run by the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (SÍM) in October 2022, with the support of the City of Reykjavik.
In the era of controversial collectives, NFTs and mega events, this is an artist-run art fair by a collective numbering 950 artists (including international artists living and working in Iceland). Its function is multifaceted: to support art practice, as well as to reinforce the societal reach and inclusivity of contemporary art. Not the usual, not another stand-alone production, but instead relevant and honest.
Located in one of Reykjavik's most historic buildings, Torg encompasses 50 exhibiting artists, a young artists' ten-meter wall, Rúrí, plus a parallel solo exhibition on erupting.
Contemporary art is claiming a pivotal role in the steady and continuing development of the city of Reykjavik. A dedicated local artists' community makes its presence felt in the city's tissue. Resilient project spaces, artist run organizations and residencies exist alongside museums and galleries.
A sense of a persistent premise is undeniable, mirroring Iceland's intriguing cultural cartography of numerous art communities spread over the island (Keflavik, Hafnarfjörður, Hveragerði, Akureyri, Seyðisfjörður). Forget hype, forget alienating intellectualizations, rehumanize, engage, allir velkomnir. Scale is indeed important, but of which attribute exactly? Contemporary art has many.
