International sculpture symposium
TREENCARNATION

The project of the sculpture symposium directly responds to the current need to cultivate
public space from sustainable sources: the rebirth of trees = TREENCARNATION. The aim of the project
is to use the trees cut down and removed due to the construction of a new tram line in Petržalka
District in Bratislava, to create sculptures. Some of the trees that had to step aside will thus have a
chance for a "second life": they will return to the community in a new form, either as functional
practical elements enriching the public space (benches, playground elements, information and
direction signs) or as works of art, co-creating the character of the place.
Timber from felled trees suitable for such "recycling" has already been sorted and stored in
the Petržalka District. An important moment of the symposium will be the involvement of residents into
the process - the possibility of observing working artists in the area, accompanying events - lectures,
networking with artists, and opening ceremony.

Number of participating local and foreign professional artists: 10 – 15
The organizers provide following: work space, material - wood (2-3 m pieces of felled trees -
see photo), accommodation near the working area and all-day meals. On the last day of the event, a
vernissage with refreshments will take place, then a catalogue will be issued and selected works will
be exhibited in a public space. The organizer will also provide basic work tools and 1-2 technical
assistants.
Participants shall cover their travel expenses and specific works tools.
Each participant of the symposium is obliged to create at least one large scale original work
of art of a creative or applied character, which will be installed in a public space.
