Kynleysi skúlptúranna er ríkjandi, dúkkur sem þrá með sínar leitandi hendur eins og ég og þú, þrá eftir samruna, heild. Að heimurinn verði heill, einn daginn. Um leið eru verkin jarðbundin, full af barnslegum uppruna og sköpunarsögu.

Hjörtur Matthías Skúlason er fæddur á Patreksfirði 1979 og ólst upp á Rauðasandi í Vesturbyggð. Hann lauk fornámi við Myndlistarskólann í Reykjavík áður en hann hóf nám í Listaháskóla Íslands og útskrifaðist þaðan 2013 með BA gráðu í vöruhönnun. Sérkenni Hjartar síðast liðin ár eru manngerðir skúlptúrar hans, handsaumaðar dúkkur sem minna okkur á hlutskipti mannsins og tengsl við náttúruna, fegurð og óhugnað, en í tvívíðum myndverkum verður líkami dúkkunnar að kyrrstæðri spennu, krafti sem býr undir niðri, munúðarfullu landslagi.

Hjörtur Matthías Skúlason's creates human beings and life in the form of sculptures that represent care and love. We are one entity, and at the same time alone in a crowd. There is hidden strength and beauty in quality craftsmanship, hand stitching and texture. The dominant asexuality in the sculptures, dolls longing with their searching hands like you, and me, longing for togetherness, wholeness. That the world will one day be whole. At the same time, the works are grounded, full of childish origins and creative history.

Hjörtur Matthías Skúlason was born in Patreksfjörður in 1979 and grew up in Rauðasandur in Vesturbyggð. He completed his preliminary studies at the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts before starting his studies at the Iceland University of the Arts, in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in product design. Hjörtur's specialty in recent years has been his human-like sculptures, hand-stitched dolls that remind us of our fate and connection with nature, beauty as well as horror. In two-dimensional artworks, the doll's body becomes a static tension, a power that lives beneath a sensual landscape.
