In Between Spaces brings together a group of artists who participated in the international SÍM Residency whose practices explore materiality, environment, temporality, and human connection through diverse interdisciplinary approaches. The exhibition unfolds through installations, sculpture, photography, moving image, and spatial interventions that examine states of transition, vulnerability, isolation, and interconnection.

Centered around the relationship between body, landscape, and architecture, the works navigate the spaces between the organic and constructed, the analog and digital, permanence and transformation. Themes of weaving, time, and ecological entanglement emerge through processes rooted in experimentation and material inquiry.

The artists engage closely with Icelandic resources and environments, incorporating materials such as geothermal clay, glacier clay, kaolin, porcelain, Icelandic wool, water, seaweed, and other organic matter transformed into bio-materials. Through casting techniques, darkroom photography, screen-based works, and tactile processes, the exhibition reflects on the sentience of landscape and the shifting conditions through which materials carry memory, presence, and change.

Rather than offering fixed narratives, The in between spaces creates an immersive environment where works exist in dialogue with one another — forming temporary connections between matter, space, and perception. The exhibition invites visitors to move through these layered encounters and experience artistic practices that respond sensitively to place, ecology, and shared contemporary conditions.

Opening as part of Fimmtudagurinn Langi (The Long Thursday), the exhibition contributes to Reykjavík’s vibrant cultural landscape, highlighting the role of international artists in shaping a diverse and evolving artistic community.
