Encountering 8000 Miles – A Sino–European Group Exhibition at Nanning Museum, Guangxi, China

On 21 August 2025, Encountering 8000 Miles opened at the Nanning Museum in Nanning, Guangxi, China. This is the third chapter of a series of exhibitions that emphasize artistic practice in dialogue across cultural boundaries. The exhibition is co-organized by the Nanning Museum and the Guangxi Chamber of Commerce of the European Union, and curated by Huang Ping.

The exhibition brings together artists from Germany, Iceland, Italy, and Poland: Andreas Burger, Christoph Bartolmäs, Erla S. Haraldsdóttir, Anna Kott, Toni Gabriele Nocker, René Luckhardt and Toni Wirthmüller. Working in painting, sculpture, and installation, the artists respond to the local context of Guangxi while
also reflecting on their European backgrounds.

For Icelandic media: Icelandic artist Erla S. Haraldsdóttir presents new works developed during a two-week residency in Guangxi Province. As part of the process, the participating artists travelled through Laibin, Wuzhou, Jinxiu, Shengtang Lake, Liubao, and the tea-growing regions of Cangwu District, engaging with landscapes, traditions, and local communities. These encounters became a starting point for Haraldsdóttir’s new works on paper and mixed media, where she reinterprets the textures of daily life, cultural heritage, and symbolism of place through a contemporary lens.

Encountering 8000 Miles emphasizes artistic research across borders — how cultural heritage becomes material for new work, and how art can operate as a bridge between different worlds.

Venue: Nanning Museum, Nanning, Guangxi, China
Organizers: Nanning Museum & Guangxi General Chamber of Commerce in the European Union e.V.
