Á sýningunni eru verk sem unnin eru upp úr mánaðardvöl á vinnustofu í Varanasi á Indlandi
2024. Verkin byggjast á sex ára rannsókn Elsu á litum og litarefnum, þar sem áherslan hefur
verið á náttúrulegan, fundinn og staðbundinn efnivið, auk alkemískra ferla við litagerð.
Á Indlandi skoðaði Elsa meðal annars notkun hversdagslegra litagjafa í daglegu lífi. Upplifanir
hennar og reynsla daganna í Varanasi framkölluðust í formi fundinna litarefna í leiðöngrum um
borgina. Á sýningunni leggur hún áherslu á að líkamna efniviðinn sem hún safnaði þar og
framkalla hann í tíma, rými og samhengi sýningarstaðarins. Það á sér stað stefnumót ólíkra
staðhátta og menningarheima í marglaga upplifunum og efniskennd.

Elsa Dóróthea Gísladóttir hefur starfað að myndlist í þrjá áratugi. Hún nam við Myndlista- og
handíðaskóla Íslands 1986–1990 og stundaði framhaldsnám við AKI í Hollandi 1991–1994. Hún
hefur setið í stjórn Nýlistasafnsins og Myndlistaskólans í Reykjavík, starfað í úthlutunarnefndum
á vegum SÍM og hlotið starfslaun listamanna.

Á síðustu árum hafa gjörningar verið mikilvægur hluti af myndlist Elsu. Sýningar hennar
einkennast af umbreytingarferlum og gjörningatengdri úrvinnslu og framsetningu.

The exhibition features works created following a month-long residency in Varanasi, India, in
2024. The pieces are rooted in Elsa’s six-year research into color and pigments, focusing on
natural, found, and local materials, alongside alchemical processes in color production.

During her time in India, Elsa explored the use of everyday color sources in daily life. Her
experiences and observations from her days in Varanasi manifested as pigments discovered
during excursions throughout the city. In this exhibition, she emphasizes embodying the
materials collected there, manifesting them within the time, space, and context of the gallery.
The result is an encounter between distinct locales and cultures through multilayered experiences
and materiality.

Elsa Dóróthea Gísladóttir has been active in the visual arts for three decades. She studied at the
Icelandic College of Art and Crafts (1986–1990) and completed her postgraduate studies at AKI
in the Netherlands (1991–1994). She has served on the boards of The Living Art Museum
(Nýlistasafnið), the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts and participated in grant allocation
committees for SÍM (The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists).

In recent years, performance art has become a vital component of Elsa's practice. Her exhibitions
are characterized by processes of transformation and performance-based processing and
presentation.
